Summer is one of the busiest seasons for the Visiting International Professional Program (VIPP) at Michigan State University (MSU). Recently, VIPP provided a professional development workshop for 14 college advisors and counsellors from four universities in China - Northwestern Polytechnical University, Shaanxi Normal University, North Sichuan Medical College and Guizhou University of Engineering Science. For the seventeen-day long program from June 25 to July 12, participants learned about student affairs practices in U.S. higher education system as well as MSU's comprehensive services for students including housing, college admission, academic support, counseling and career service. Delegation was impressed by MSU's practices and promised they will apply what they learned to better serve their own students in China. The workshop was managed by Qing Xia, Senior Assistant Director of China Office at MSU.

The workshop consisted of lectures by MSU faculty, visits to various campus units (such as the MSU library, Counseling Center, and HATCH), a day trip to Wayne State University, and cultural excursions in Lansing areas. The following are some key moments during the Student Affairs Workshop for Chinese delegates.

Lecture by MSU faculty: Dr. Roger Baldwin, a professor of educational administration in the Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education at Michigan State University, introduces the overview of America higher education for participants.

A Visit to MSU Counseling Center: Psychological counselor Yiqing Hong at MSU Counselling Center met delegates and they discussed differences between Chinese and American Counselling Centers and exchanged some ideas how to help students' mental health.

A guided tour at MSU main library: Delegates saw MSU's collection of antique books and maps related to Asia and China. Dr. Wu Xian gave a guided tour and the leader of the participants, Mr.Zhijiang Wang from Northwestern Polytechnical University commented his kindness and generosity to show everything to the group

A Visit to Michigan Capitol: The group visited Michigan State Capitol and learned about interesting history of Michigan from a guided tour.

A Day trip to Wayne State University: To broaden their perspectives, VIPP arranged a visit to Wayne State University and delegates learned more about the higher education systems in Michigan other than MSU.

Daily Work and Group Discussion: Participants got together in a study room every night to conclude the whole day study or visit and prepare for the graduation presentation.

Graduation ceremony: The participants received the certificates for their hard work and study during 17 day-long journey at MSU.

VIPP is proud to share and promote MSU's best practices in Student Affairs and Services among international higher education professionals. Chinese delegation will introduce and apply what they learned at MSU to their universities to lead their home institutions. VIPP continues developing and building partnerships with other universities to take MSU to the next goal: from a land-grant to a world-grant university.
