Department: Visiting International Professional Program
Can you imagine living without your phone or the Internet? Telecommunication is a vital part of our lives and we cannot do business without it. But have you thought about who provides it for us? On February 24, visiting scholars in the Visiting International Professional Program (VIPP) at Michigan State University (MSU) visited ACD Net, mid-Michigan's largest independent phone and internet provider. Dr. Erika Butler, part of VIPP's faculty, who teaches US "Telecommunication Systems" and "Organizational Behavior" classes, organized the field trip.
Mr. Kevin Meeker, Sales Engineer at ACD Net welcomed the VIPP group and provided an informative presentation on their history and business. A tour to their facilities including warehouse and data center was offered as well.

Located in Lansing, Michigan, ACD provides comprehensive telecom services including fiber optic service, metro Ethernet, telephone, hosted phone service, DSL, datacenter and web hosting. Their customers range from a variety of groups such as residential individuals, schools, non-profits, small and medium businesses, government and municipalities, and Fortune 500 companies. Since its foundation in 1992, their business has grown and now they have branched out to build infrastructure such as fiber optic cable and cloud-enabled services.
Its growth and capacity impressed Mr. Woo Ram Kim, manager of SK Telecom, the largest telecommunication service provider in South Korea. He commented, "I was impressed by the fact that a local company provides Internet and telephone services independently. In my knowledge, Internet and telephone services are usually provided by the State or a few number of large companies because of the enormous CAPEX (capital expenditure) and technology issues. Many experts agree that the biggest determining factor for the success of ISP business is the guarantee of reliable, high-speed Internet service. Although ACD is a local business it actively expands its business by providing high-level technology and reliable services. That is impressive."
VIPP scholars toured the data center operated by ACD Net.
ACD Net's size and organizational culture also impressed participants. Mr. Meeker emphasized that company culture is to always put your best foot forward and to work hard. ACD Net employs around 140 people and provides stable tech jobs to local communities. The field trip to ADC Net was a great opportunity for our visiting scholars to learn more about the telecommunications industry in Michigan and its impact on our daily lives.
