The Global Professional Education Program (GPEP) is an intensive professional development program that is best suited to early or mid-career professionals in any field who wish to take full advantage of Michigan State University's academic resources to advance their career and expand their professional networks. For three months to one year, GPEP participants will take part in a fully immersive professional and cultural exchange experience to develop both personally and professionally. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a Global Professional Certificate.
Throughout the program, GPEP participants engage in a variety of professional and enrichment activities such as VIPP courses, special lectures and seminars, conducting independent research, and participating in cultural and community events. Programs are personalized to each participant's career goals and professional interests and therefore program details vary. Below are some typical program components of the GPEP program.
VIPP curriculum is designed to equip today’s professionals with the most transferable skills applicable to any discipline. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of cross-cultural and global issues, develop strong and practical leadership skills, and enhance professionalism regardless of background.
All VIPP courses are developed to help participants achieve four learning outcomes: Competent Professionalism, Effective Communication, Strong Leadership, and Multicultural & Global Awareness. Obtaining these skills will enable you to progress and thrive in your professional life and elevate your career to the next level from today’s professional to tomorrow’s leader.
Participants can choose from a wide variety of courses based on their interests, language ability, and timetable. Some example courses include Academic and Professional Writing, American Culture, Critical Thinking, Leadership Through Change and Innovation, etc. For a full list of VIPP courses, please refer to our curriculum page.
VIPP also assists participants with MSU academic course auditing, although this is not guaranteed.
VIPP provides participants with opportunities for site tours and field trips for hands-on learning and networking opportunities. Popular destinations include the Michigan Capitol, the Michigan Supreme Court Learning Center, the Library of Michigan, and local schools. VIPP also organizes various lectures and workshops featuring expert guest speakers from MSU and around the country. GPEP participants may also be eligible to apply for an endowment to support travel to conferences related to their research projects.
Participants will have many opportunities for cultural exchange and to learn about life in Michigan and the United States through activities such as the VIPP Home Hospitality, VIPP Football Tailgate Party, Fall Foliage Trip, and other events hosted by VIPP and MSU throughout the year. Haiyan TangDuring my time as a second-time visiting scholar at Visiting International Professional Program, I’m even enjoying the invaluable opportunity to engage in both academic developing and cultural exchange. Our program brings together participants from diverse academic backgrounds, which allows us to learn from one another through general education courses like Communication Skills, System Thinking, Cultural Aspects of Generative AI with lovely instructors. As a learner in the field of language teaching, I'm appreciative of having the chance to audit courses at the College of Education and Linguistics Center, where I explored topics which is closed related to my field. This combination of breadth and depth which always encourage open dialogue, critical thinking and creativity has greatly enriched my academic vision and teaching philosophy.
Beyond academics, the days I have being staying also broadened my global perspective. I learned to appreciate the diversity of educational practices and the power of international collaboration. There are always wonderful opportunities to enjoy the vibrant cultural, educational, volunteering and natural resources of the community.I even learned to farm this summer. Participating in various campus and local events has deepened my understanding of American culture and educational values. It has also been heartwarming to see my children thrive and enjoy their time here. Up to now, this journey has strengthened my commitment to promoting cross-cultural understanding and advancing language education in both my home country and the international community. Altogether, this program has once again reminded me of the transformative power of international exchange and lifelong learning.
Yi YuanI’ve always loved exploring new things and have traveled to many countries for work and vacations. But coming to MSU as a visiting scholar through the VIPP program has brought the deepest change.
Here, no matter how unusual a question sounds, people respond with, “That’s a good question.” They take it seriously and share their honest thoughts. In class, open discussions and the clash of ideas showed me that one question can lead to many answers — as wide as the world itself. Talking with scholars from different countries and cultures helped me realize how limiting black-and-white thinking can be.
Having seen people define success, happiness, and personal growth in very different ways, I’ve come to better understand what it means to be yourself, to not be defined by others, and to know how unique you are.
“The paths you’ve walked have become the quiet strength beneath your feet, and the books you’ve read have shaped the way you see the world.” Now I know: Growth can be staying grounded or stepping into the unknown. Success can mean traditional achievement or simply living with peace and clarity.
Ying LiIt has been over a year since I arrived at MSU as a visiting scholar, and the experience has been one of constant exploration and discovery. Beyond the romantic landscapes of the Great Lakes, I have traveled across the East Coast, West Coast, and the South of the United States, gaining a deeper appreciation of its cultural diversity.
Within the university, the MSU community and the VIPP program have provided me with tremendous warmth and support, giving me a strong sense of belonging. I have received valuable guidance from professors, made new friends, and actively participated in campus life—from soccer and basketball games to comedy shows and Homecoming events. I also volunteered in several student organizations, living out the true Spartan spirit. It has truly been a beautiful and rewarding year
